3rd ENRICH Training workshop " Project & Intellectual Property Management” and 1st Supranational Conference.

The 3rd ENRICH training workshop “Project & Intellectual Property Management" will take place at MZUMBE University in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on 6th and 7th October 2015. This workshop is being co-organised by MZUMBE University and the University of Alicante (UA), coordinator of the ENRICH project.

The objective of this 3rd workshop is to introduce successful Project Management and provide an introduction to Intellectual Property Rights covering dissemination/publication issues, licensing agreements and patent strategy in R&D projects.

The workshop will be attended by more than 25 people: representatives from the ENRICH Higher Education Institution (HEI) partners from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, as well as representatives from the Directorate of Research Management and Development (DRMD) of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of Kenya, the Tanzanian Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) and Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST).

This workshop will be followed by the 1st ENRICH Supranational Conference that will take place on 8th October at MZUMBE University. The objective of this conference is to foster and strengthen the linkage among Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda at the policy level. Attendees will discuss about the actions that can be taken to facilitate the regional STI co-operation at the policy level. Representatives from STI Ministries, Universities, National Science and Technology Councils and external experts in the energy and environment sectors will attend the conference.

Finally, on the 9th October a coordination meeting, in which UA will present the up-to-date workplan and goals of the ENRICH project and the next workshop will take place.

The 2nd ENRICH training workshop on "Fundraising & Grant writing” was hosted at MOI University, Nairobi, Kenya, on May 2015. It provided good practice examples and stimulated discussions around the following main topics: fundraising, Project Cycle Management (PCM), grant writing and project ideas and was provided by the ENRICH EU partners, Glasgow Caledonian University and UA. The potential of photovoltaic powered ICT centers for delivery of ODeL programs to rural areas

The majority of Tanzanians as in most African countries live in the rural areas. Most higher education institutions however, are concentrated in urban areas, and this is one reason for the low participation rates in higher education in Tanzania. While open and distance learning offers a viable solution to the imbalance between where the higher education institutions are located and where the population resides. The rural areas are mostly not connected to the national electricity grid and this makes it difficult to deploy information and communication technologies (ICTs) in open and distance learning. While there are several possible power sources, for example petrol or diesel generators to power ICT facilities, these need regular maintenance and are expensive to run. The alternative proposed is to explore the use of photovoltaic or solar energy.
